UFO conspiracy theorists cause real damage by inspiring crappy movie

Emmerich’s second attempt at a global weather story began when he was filming “The Patriot” in South Carolina, and nearby hurricanes sent sheets of rain that disrupted shooting.

“I went to the bookstore in the hotel, and there was a book called ‘The Coming Global Superstorm,’” he said.

The book by self-appointed paranormal experts Art Bell and Whitley Strieber gives what some call a tabloid-style treatment of global-warming facts.

Based on at least a little research into the scientific consensus, the book features one low-probability scenario for dramatic effect: The rapid melting of ice caps pushes the insulating Gulf Stream current farther south in the Atlantic. The result: a sudden ice age descends on Manhattan and surrounding environs.
